A summer trip to Vermont led to much more than dropping Charlotte off at camp! As usual, Sandy stopped at a favorite yarn store to browse and came upon this:
By Christmas Sandy had made one and through friends found Joe, a policeman in Oneonta, who would be deployed to Afghanistan as part of a National Guard engineering unit:
Joe shared that there would be 180 soldiers in his unit. After much family discussion Genevieve created this poster that we adapted for several local yarn stores:
Knitters responded from a variety of places. There were women at our local nursing home who participated:
Beyond Oneonta, a store in Binghamton worked with us:
As the deadline approached Charlotte, Rachel and Mary sorted the liners for transport to the departure ceremony for the National Guard company:
We had more than enough. Timmy and I made the trip to the departure celebration where we were able to present the project and distribute the liners and neck coolers to each soldier.
Cheryl contacted us on behalf of her son, Tommy, a marine, who had already been deployed:
The knitters kept going to add to the extra liners leftover to create a supply for his unit:
Cheryl stopped by to pick them up with her younger son.
